For Families

Arriving with your spouse and children

Moving here with a family means more paperwork and more people who need a place to belong. This page is about both.

Schools and adult English classes

State College Area School District — Community Education

The same office handles enrolling your children and adult ESL classes.

Bring your children's previous school records and vaccination records. If they are not in English, bring them anyway — the office is used to this.

Mid-State Literacy Council

Free one-on-one tutoring and small-group classes for adults learning English, preparing for citizenship, or building reading and writing skills.

Classes are free or low-cost and designed for adults. This is one of the best first steps for a spouse who wants to practice English and meet people in the community.

Your children's health

Pediatric care, school requirements, and wellness in State College.

Care

Local pediatric care

  • Mount Nittany Medical Center — general and emergency care for the whole family.
  • One Hand Foundation mobile pediatric dental clinic — our own service. Ask us when it is next running.
  • CVIM (Centre Volunteers in Medicine) — free care for families who are uninsured or underinsured.
School requirements

Records & checkups

  • Bring previous school records and vaccination records. If they are not in English, bring them anyway — the district office is used to this.
  • Pennsylvania requires up-to-date immunizations, a physical exam, and a dental exam for school enrollment.
  • Ask the school nurse about allergy and dietary accommodation forms before the first day.
Nutrition & support

Healthy starts

  • WIC provides food support for pregnant women and young children.
  • Ask the school about halal meal options, vegetarian alternatives, and bringing lunch from home.
  • Parks, the YMCA pool, and library story times are easy ways to keep children active and social.

For your spouse

Community, learning, and purpose while living in State College.

Many dependent visas do not allow work. That is worth saying plainly, because a spouse who cannot work and does not yet know anyone can feel very alone here very quickly — often before the person who came to study even notices. This is exactly what mentor matching and family halaqas are for.

Sisters' circles

Weekly halaqas, coffee meetups, and a women's WhatsApp group where rides, recipes, and reminders are shared. See Prayer & Community for the link.

English & learning

Free ESL classes and Conversation Partners through the Mid-State Literacy Council and Schlow Library. See Living Here for schedules.

Volunteering

Masjid outreach, food-bank packing, and airport welcomes are meaningful ways to serve while building a local network.

Family events

Ramadan iftars, Eid gatherings, and family halaqas are where most people meet their first friends here.

Practical help for new parents

These are normal programs that many families here use. There is nothing shameful about them.

If you arrive without a car, ask us about a car seat and a stroller before you land. A car seat is legally required to drive a young child anywhere in Pennsylvania, including home from the airport.
